Ah I am so excited to be reviewing this style of jeans today! I had been wanting to try the Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean for a long time, and I have to say that I am so glad I got them! I’ve seen this style of jeans on a lot of people and it gets great reviews on the Madewell website. They offer this style in many washes and the wash I picked is called ainsworth.
How do Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans Fit?
They are high rise, 11 inches to be exact! Madewell’s website describes them as a mom jean, fitted through the thigh with a subtly tapered, full length leg. The website suggests sizing down one size for a fitted look or sticking with your normal size for a more slouchy look. I prefer my denim fitted, so I did opt to size down one size. They stretch out slightly with wear. I am 5’7″ and I got the standard length which is a 28″ inseam. They also come in petite (25 1/2″ inseams) and tall (31″ inseam). They offer a wide size range, from 23 to 37.
I have mom jeans from other brands and I agree that this cut similar, but less tapered in the leg. If you are looking for something that isn’t a skinny jean, but you don’t want a fully straight leg 90’s jean, this is a perfect in-beween.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean Fabric
In the ainsworth wash, the fabric is mid-weight (12 oz.) and is composed of 99% cotton and 1% spandex. They feel very similar to rigid jeans but the small amount of spandex adds a bit of stretch and comfort without having to wear them in. Most of the washes come hemmed at the ankle but the ainsworth wash is frayed— so you can purchase a wash with a cleaner look, or this more casual, vintage-like pair.

1) Sweater Vest + Cheetah Print Mules

I styled this sweater vest in so many of my summer outfits and I am very happy to continue wearing it into early fall. It works well with these jeans, adding texture and a muted tone. I added a black crossbody bag and my cheetah print mules to this look creating repeated black and brown tones throughout.
2.) Muscle Tee + Bandana + Huarache Sandals
Tee (I sized down one size) | Bandana | Sunglasses (old from Warby Parker – similar) | Earrings | Bag | Jeans (I sized down one size) | Shoes (old from Nisolo – new version)
This outfit feels mostly summery, but like a tiny tip toe into fall because of the jeans. I love how the frayed hem gives a laid-back feeling and the accessories amp up the summer feeling in this look. I have loved muscle tees this spring and summer and will be wearing them as long as the weather allows.
3.) Graphic Tee + White Sneakers
Graphic Tee | Earrings | Backpack | Jeans (I sized down one size) | Sneakers
This look is so comfy and feels so me. I love graphic tees, denim, and white sneakers. I recently got this backpack for our trip to Chicago and I love it so much! It fits my laptop, so I can take it with me to coffee shops when I go to write blog posts on days that my outfit is super casual— which let’s be honest, is often!.
4.) Feminine Blouse + Belt + Woven Mules
Shirt (I sized down one size) | Earrings | Belt | Jeans (I sized down one size) | Shoes (I sized up one size but 1/2 would probably be enough)
I love texture, neutrals, and feminine details— this look has all three. I think these elements combined always creates outfits that are casual and wearable, but not boring. These mules are one of my favorite pairs and I have had them for years. The frayed hem on these jeans really seems to highlight/draw attention to whatever shoes you choose to wear, which I like!
Overall, I really like these jeans. They are incredibly wearable and fit with my casual aesthetic. They are comfortable and I love the medium wash. For this wash in particular, I think the only thing that makes them less versatile, is the raw hem— but I also think it’s a really interesting detail that I like. For me as someone with a casual aesthetic, they are perfect, but if you are someone who wants to be able to dress up a look, grabbing a hemmed pair would probably work better. As I mentioned before, if you are wanting to transition away from skinny jeans but a straight leg style feels like too big of a jump, this is a great in between!
