It is that time of year when many of us begin to crave fall things! Pumpkin spice lattes are back a Starbucks, and I am sure that Trader Joe’s will release their full haul of all of their pumpkin items soon. I am ready to be wearing sweaters and jeans, but the truth is— it is still hot here in the south!
So how can you mix a little bit of fall in with your summer outfits? How do you make outfits that work as the weather cools down and goes back and forth between hot and cool? Let me show you five easy things I do to create summer to fall transitional outfits!
1.) Change your Color Palette
This first strategy is best for when you really want to wear something fall-ish but it is still pretty warm outside. Instead of wearing super light or bright summery colors and/or prints, switch to a fall color palette of darker and/or more mutes tones and neutral prints.
Top | Belt Bag (mine is the metallic finish and it is sold out, but they now offer it in a matte finish) | Shorts | Mules

2.) Change Your Sleeve Length
Instead of wearing a tank top or t-shirt, opt for long sleeves with your shorts or skirt. You can push the sleeves up or down if you feel warm or a bit chilly. This is my personal favorite summer to fall transitional outfit combo!
Sweatshirt | Belt | Earrings | Shorts | Sneakers
3.) Swap Shorts for Cropped Pants
Cropped jeans in a summery wash or cropped pants made of a lighter-weight cotton or linen are perfect transitional pants as the weather changes. Rotate your shorts out for these pants, but stay cool by pairing them up with a tank or tee.
Tank | Belt | Earrings | Jeans | Shoes
4.) Add a Top Layer
Adding a lightweight jacket, sweater blazer, blazer or cardigan immediately adds warmth and a touch of fall to your outfit. If you get too warm, no worries, just take off your top layer and tie it around your waist.
Jacket (old – this year’s version) | Earrings | imogene + willie tee (mine is old but they always have a great selection) | Shorts | Mules
5.) Swap Sandals for Boots
The power of shoes! Just this one change can change the look and feel of your entire outfit. Swapping your sandals for boots immediately brings the feels of your outfit away from summer and towards fall.
Dress ( old – similar, similar both from the same brand) | Earrings | Boots (old – similar same brand)
How about you— are you savoring the last bit of summer or are you ready for fall to be in full swing? Which of these strategies is your favorite for making summer to fall transitional outfits? I would love to hear from you in the comments below!
