I could wear denim every day, talk about it every day, and geek out about it for the rest of my life. I realize this sounds SO extra, but I’m trying to be better about embracing my extra-ness and quirks, even if people might think it’s weird. : )
Fall is almost here (eeek!) and brands are releasing their pre-fall and fall collections. Who’s excited!? Of course I’ve checked in with my favorite denim brands to see what they’re pushing for fall denim trends 2024. And I figured I’d share what I found and what I see happening in the world of denim, with you!
Last week I attended a luncheon in downtown Nashville that was co-hosted by Emerson Grace and Citizens of Humanity. It was a gathering to launch Citizen’s new soft stretch denim. It was such a fun event and I was able to talk with some of the Citizen’s team about their denim and try on a bunch of the styles the next day at Emerson Grace. This couple of days amped up my already very high enthusiasm about denim for fall. : )
Personally, I invest in high-quality denim from premium denim brands. I never regret it, and the investment always more than pays off in cost per wear. Denim is expensive to produce— you won’t find the washes, intentional design details, and quality of material in cheap jeans. If the styles I am recommending are out of your price range, I recommend: searching for sales, looking on secondhand sites like the RealReal or Poshmark, or vintage/secondhand shopping in-store where you live. I will link similar for less styles but if you can, I highly recommend the investment pieces.
It’s a fun time to be wearing denim. There are so many different styles available. Love experimenting? You have a great variety to try. Prefer sticking with your signature fit or two? No matter what they are, I’m sure you can find them.
If you see something you like you can shop for the item(s) and support my blog at the same time by purchasing through the affiliate links in this post, at no extra cost to you. As always, I’m so grateful for your support!
BAGGY— oversized denim is still hitting the racks this season. I love the comfort of voluminous jeans and stylistically they feel really laid-back. I personally like them best with a fitted top for contrast and to balance out proportions or, with an oversized button-up shirt to match the volume on the bottom. [similar for less & similar for less]
WIDE LEG— similar to baggy, but the more fitted top block makes this style feel more elevated and versatile. I love them in full length for fall, but cropped lengths also work. These can easily be dressed up or down. [similar for less & similar for less)
DARK WASHES— raw denim and dark washes are popping up everywhere this season. They feel more crisp and dressy compared to light or mid wash blues and they work in any silhouette. [similar for less & similar for less]
CREAMS/WHITES— gone are the days of no white after Labor Day, we love to embrace it all year long. White and ecru are so versatile and bring a lovely sense of contrast against darker fall hues. [similar for less & similar for less]
BARREL LEG— probably the most controversial, you love them or hate them, just like cilantro. : ) I love this cut (and cilantro too) because I think it looks a bit sculptural and cool. Not only that, curved cuts remind me of the female figure and I think that is a beautiful thing. [similar for less & similar for less & similar for less]
FLARE/BOOTCUT— retro 70’s vibes and a fun silhouette. This cut is another way to add volume to your outfits along with the baggy and wide leg styles. They look great with heeled boots for fall. [similar for less & similar for less]
STRAIGHT— the most classic cut of them all— see vintage Levi’s 501 jeans and everything modeled after them. : ) This cut has been around for decades and I don’t think it’s going anywhere. [similar for less & similar for less]
SLIM/SKINNY— I know— they were gone for two seconds, started a riff between gen z and millennials, and now they’re back!? They were seen all over the runways recently, and I’m curious to see if/when they hit the streets. For me it won’t be a true skinny, but I’m not against a slim jean if it’s styled right. [similar for less & similar for less]
PUDDLE HEM— not ideal when you live in snowy climates (I’m having flashbacks to middle school in Michigan). I don’t know if this trend is for me, but it’s definitely happening. [similar for less & similar for less]
UTILITY— this is still going strong after we are a few seasons into it. It’s a casual style with a bunch of design interest. [similar for less & similar for less]
PLEATED— basically a denim trouser, showing up in full-length, wide-leg styles. I like the juxtaposition of the dressy silhouette with the casual fabric. [similar for less & similar for less]
DISTRESSED— people tried to say this was out in the spring and I didn’t believe them. I’m still into the ripped out knees, personally. [similar for less & similar for less]
ILLUSION— the not-so-denimy denim. From metallics to stone-washing and fabric overlays, these jeans are more like art than your everyday pair. For the maximalists who love extra details and unique pieces. These are less versatile and more of a statement piece. [similar for less & similar for less]
CUFFED/CROPPED— my cuffed jeans are one of my favorites and most-worn pairs this year. I like the laid back feel, extra detail, and that you can adjust the length to a cropped jean. [similar for less & similar for less]
You will find denim in many other garments besides jeans. It’s spanning most categories this season from shirt to jackets, dresses and even accessories. I love a double denim look, and these pieces will help achieve that.
VEST JACKET— feels cool, masculine, and versatile. [similar for less]
OVERSIZED BUTTON UP SHIRT— a versatile piece for double denim looks, worn open over another shirt, or contrasted with a more dressy bottom. [similar for less]
VEST— vests are really having a moment this season. This piece can be worn alone, buttoned up as a shirt or layered over a white tee.
BLOUSE— denim is a casual fabric but I like the style contrast it brings to a feminine puff sleeve blouse. [similar for less]
HANDBAG— an unexpected material choice for a bag, and that’s why I like it. [similar for less]
SLEEVELESS SHIRT— a versatile option that can be worn closed or open and layered as a vest. [similar for less]
DRESS— bringing denim into occasionwear is another unexpected design choice and I love it.
SKIRT— denim skirts have been back for the last few seasons first in maxi and midi, then mini and now I’m seeing pencil skirt styles. [similar for less]
TRENCH COAT— another item that traditionally is not made with denim. This is my favorite of the unexpected pieces to show up in this fabric. [similar for less]
JACKET— a classic piece that is incredibly versatile and can live in your closet forever. [similar for less]
BOMBER— a sporty jacket, like many things I’ve mentioned, not traditionally made in denim, but a style I enjoy wearing for the shape and casual feel. [similar for less]
CROPPED JACKET— perfect to pair with voluminous bottoms and with dresses. I’ve been loving cropped shirts so naturally I love a cropped jacket too. [similar for less]
BASEBALL HAT— reminds me of the 90’s and I’m here for it. Denim is popping up in lots of accessories. [similar for less]
