A white button down shirt is a classic wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. I think the best thing about it, is it’s versatility— you can make so many different outfits with it! Today I am sharing five different ways you can wear a white button down shirt this fall and winter!
Outfit #1: Front tucked with Ripped Mom Jeans and Oxfords
Shirt (similar)| Hat | Bag (old – similar from the same brand) | Earrings | Jeans (mine are a an older wash and I got the long length – I am 5’7″) | Shoes

I really like this combination because of the contrast between the light, tailored shirt and the laid-back, ripped jeans. It is such a great outfit base and you can add any color or style accessories to it— endless options! I chose tan accessories that keep the look casual. You can also dress this up with heels or dress boots and fancier jewelry and a clutch.
Outfit #2: Layered under a Crewneck Sweater with Jeans and Mules
Shirt (similar) | Sweater (mine is from last year – this year’s version) | Earrings | Bag (old – similar same brand) | Jeans (this brand of jeans runs large – I sized down one size from my normal size) | Shoes
Layering a white shirt under a crewneck sweater gives this outfit a bit of a preppy vibe, which is honestly not usually my style. However, I do incorporate hints of it in my outfits (blazer, oxfords, etc.) but only in small ways. Leaving the white shirt untucked keeps it looking casual, and the cheetah print mules keep it more whimsical and less serious. You could tuck in the shirt and wear trousers for a dressier look.
Outfit #3: Unbuttoned as Top Layer over a Shirt with Jeans and Sneakers
Shirt (similar) | Turtleneck | Earrings | Jeans | Sneakers
This look is very casual and gives all the mom vibes. I like this outfit with white sneakers, but you could swap them for boots to make it feel less casual and more put together. Mules or flats would also evaluate this look a bit. I like the open shirt with the shirt underneath tucked in, highlighting the high-waisted denim.
Outfit #4: Buttoned Up all the way with a Sweater Blazer, Jeans, and Loafers
Shirt (similar) | Sweater Blazer (old from J.Crew – similar) | Earrings | Jeans (I sized down one size) | Shoes (old from Zara – similar)
I love a button down shirt fully buttoned up! Here I left it untucked, but it could also be front tucked or fully tucked it to make this outfit look more put together and less casual. I went with cognac loafers but I think black shoes would work well too! I like the leopard print sweater blazer for added visual interest, but a regular sweater blazer, blazer, or cardigan sweater would also work as the top layer in this outfit combination. Any color or print will work on the top layer, as the base layer is all neutral.
Outfit #5: Fully tucked in with Jeans and Flats
Shirt (similar) | Jeans (mine are an older wash, also 100% cotton and I sized up one size) | Earrings | Flats
This is a super simple look with the white button down shirt fully tucked into these vintage-like jeans. Again, pretty much any shoes will work. I opted for some snake print flats to add a bit of whimsey. Despite owning a lot of basics and neutrals, I personally need to have fun pieces too add more visual interest and keep my outfits fun.

[…] Versatility, versatility, versatility. This is what this layer is all about— having basic pieces in place that become a springboard for making interesting outfits. A great example is a classic, white, button-down shirt. It is one of the most versatile garments in my closet and I can make so many outfits with it because it can be styled many different ways, (i.e. worn open as a top layer, buttoned up completely, front tucked with the top few buttons open, etc.) and paired with any other color.
