I’m kicking off the new year by sharing a list of year round wardrobe essentials. These 50 versatile, staple items can stay in rotation every season as the foundation of your wardrobe. From there, you can pull out, add to, and fill in with other pieces to round out your wardrobe each season. Casual outfits, dressy ones, workwear or weekend wear, these essentials can make outfits for all occasions. If you want to build a solid wardrobe, this list is a great place to start.

For the past few years I’ve been sharing how I build my seasonal wardrobes. It’s a layered process with essentials first and statement pieces second. Early in the journey I realized that it’s not four full seasonal wardrobes, it’s more like two— spring and fall, with a a smaller amount of supplemental pieces added to the spring wardrobe for summer and to the fall wardrobe for winter.

The more I created seasonal wardrobes, the more I realized that many pieces cross over from season to season. Because of that, I had the idea to organize my wardrobe in a different way, building a foundational layer of basics that stays in rotation all year round.

What does this accomplish? For me, it’s a clear view of what I have and feels simpler to reference. There are less moving parts. These year round wardrobe essentials work for the climate I live in and align with my style. With that said, I think this approach will work for everyone, regardless of where you live and what your style is, but it might not look like these exact items. You can easily swap what doesn’t work for you and add in what does.
