The 1970’s is my favorite fashion decade.
New things were happening. Women were wearing pants more often, even to work. Denim (my fav) was widely worn in this fashion decade in a variety of garments. People were wearing graphic tees supporting their favorite causes and bands. Another item I personally love, the jumpsuit, was popular. The traditional model of buying an outfit as a whole matching ensamble was challenged as a younger, more modern fashion approach emerged and consumers were encouraged to buy mix and match separate pieces.
There were so many different styles: punk rock, hippie, disco, boho, and the list goes on. There were lots of cool design details like big sunglasses, fringe, macrame, bell sleeves, bow tie blouses, bell bottoms, corduroy, etc. As well as a lot of colors like shades of brown, red, light blue, orange, light yellow, olive green, and more.
Iconic fashion designers defined what style was in this decade, and much of it has carried forward into fashion today. Just to name a few of them: Diane von Furstenberg created the wrap dress in 1974, a style still widely worn today. Yves Saint Laurant’s women’s trousers suits rose in popularity in the 70’s, and we’re still wearing this style today. Halston created jersey dresses, new technology for the modern woman.
I could go on and on, but I’ll leave you with that. : )
I thought it would be a fun project to put together a 1970’s-inspired summer capsule wardrobe to share with you. Additionally, I created outfits with the items that I hope can serve as further inspiration if you love 70’s fashion too.
